Kirby and the Crystal shards was the only Kirby game to hit the Nintendo 64.
This game followed the 'collect the items' suite that Dreamland 2 and 3 possessed. The game had Kirby wander through
his little dreamworld, hopping from planet to planet collecting little purple shiny crystals along his path. The enviroment
were 3D, however Kirby was forced into a straight line the entire time. However it never seemed like the linear entrapment
was too out of place in the 3D enviroment. Occasional levels allowed you to move in circles around a given area, but
there was never any spherical control movement. This also removed the need of the joystick, and made use of the other
part of the N64 controller no one used (the D-pad! Dear me!). The enviroments were very nicely done, although
a tad blocky at times, but all and all the visuals were nicely put together.
There is also a team of characters who assist you in finding the crystals, including
a fairie who collects the crystals and builds them up for you (and doesn't really physically help you otherwise), a waddle
dee who gives you lots of different form of transportation-type minigames, an artist who occasionally throws an item your
way and gives you hints about a Crystal once in a blue moon, and King Dee Dee Dee who surprisngly becomes your ally, assists
you in some stages in which brute strength is neccesary. The music was more or less fitting, some tracks proved very
nice, others proved to be garbage. But, the gameplay was what made it great. You could combine different abilities
to make new ones, making Kirby able to use even more powerful abilities if you could aquire it. All and all this game
was a great installment into the Kirby series.
